How to Adapt Your Wardrobe to Fashion’s Changing Silhouettes

Fashion trends are constantly changing, and new silhouettes are key to staying current. However, it’s important to stay true to your own personal style without feeling left behind. For example, if you’ve been wearing skinny jeans or pants for years, and now wide leg pants are coming back in, you may wonder how to adapt to this trend without feeling uncomfortable.

The older you get, the slower you are likely to adopt new fashion trends, this is because as we age it takes us longer to get used to the new silhouette and see it as attractive (unless it’s an old favourite coming back into style that we didn’t want to let go of to start with).

How to Adapt Your Wardrobe to Fashion’s Changing Silhouettes

1. Know What Suits Your Body Shape

One way to stay true to your personal style is to consider your body shape and find silhouettes that flatter it. For instance, if you have an H shape, you may look better with a slimmer bottom and a more voluminous top. So, if you want to wear wide-leg pants, you could opt for slightly less wide-cut or even straight-leg pants rather than a skinny trousers.

2. Understand What Works for Your Body Proportions

You could also experiment with different styles of tops, such as a more fitted shirt or or top, to balance out volume of the wider-leg trouser.  Also, look at things like the rise of trousers – higher rises can work with shorter tops or tucked-in tops (which is currently back in trend) – if you have a less-defined waist and want to tuck, make sure your blouse is voluminous, then tuck and blouse the top over the waistband of your trousers.  If you have a defined waist and a balanced rise (proportionally) then tucking in tighter tops can work for you, otherwise if you have a long rise, tucking and blousing is best for  you too!)

If you have an A, X or V shape body then the wider-leg pant will be your best friend, and you’ll probably feel happy to forgo the skinny jeans and trousers of the last decade as this is your time to shine!

When deciding which version of the latest fashion trends to include in your wardrobe, look at what flatters your body shape (check out your body shape bible for tips) and body proportions, then think about balance and proportions as well.

3. Select Garments in the Best Fabrics For Your Body

Another aspect to consider is the fabric choice. Certain fabrics tend to have more body, which can make them stand further away from the body. For example, linen has more body and may not suit everyone. Instead, you could opt for a more fluid fabric, like silk, tencel, or viscose, that has more drape and falls closer to the body with wider-cut garments.

4. Make Sure the New Garments Reflect Your Personal Style

While it can be tempting to jump on the latest trend bandwagon, it is important to stay true to your own preferences and sense of style. You don’t have to follow every trend blindly. Consider which elements of the trend work for you and which don’t, and incorporate them accordingly. For example, if you prefer a more classic or minimalist look, you could opt for a simple, tailored version of a new trend, rather than going all out with the latest statement piece. Select the ones that suit your style and body shape and modify them in a way that makes you feel comfortable and confident. Remember, fashion trends are fleeting, but your personal style is timeless.
