Electric vehicles aren't the only eco-friendly vehicles revolutionizing the automotive industry. Hydrogen cars are currently in production, and many hope this new technology will transform cars of the future.

Hydrogen cars (H 2) are powered by hydrogen fuel cells through a REDOX reaction that uses hydrogen and oxygen to generate electricity. This reaction powers the battery, and unlike gas-powered cars, it produces eco-friendly emissions. Some other benefits to this technology include long fuel range and fast refueling.

While there are many benefits to using hydrogen fuel as opposed to gas, there are some obstacles that hydrogen vehicles will have to overcome in order to be mainstream. The biggest issues facing hydrogen vehicles are logistical ones. Hydrogen fuel cell stations will need to be built across the globe in order for drivers to refuel their tanks. This is a big undertaking that will take decades to complete.

Despite some logistical challenges, car manufacturers such as Toyota and Honda are still investing big in this eco-friendly car technology.

Discover why many are calling hydrogen as the fuel of the future and hydrogen cars more energy-efficient than electric in the animated visual from The Zebra below.
