Hotel Review: Canvas Boutique Hotel

By Wanderingjoshua
Puerto Princesa is transforming into a tourist hub with many developments in place. The tourist boom will not happen immediately but will occur over the years. One place to relax after enjoying a trip to Honda Bay and the UNESCO-listed Underground River is Canvas Boutique Hotel.

Facilities
The first time I entered the lobby of Canvas, I was immediately impressed. The design of the interior was different and modern.

Despite it being a hotel, the atmosphere felt more like a hostel, with the unique designs and paintings on the walls.

The addition of a mini library by the pool reminded me so much of the hostels I've stayed in during my trips.

The pool area was an excellent place to relax and spend time in. There were hangout areas just next to the pool, other than the usual lounge chairs, which was a big plus for me. Other than the pool, the hotel also has conference facilities for business travelers or for guests who want to rent it.

The hotel lived up to its rating and price range with its well-maintained facilities and design.

Bedroom
The superior room was spacious to say the least, it had a sitting area, washroom, a toilet, a separate bath and a table and desk, along with a small refrigerator and TV. The two beds will comfortably accommodate four people, whether friends, couples or families.

The sitting and desk area were a plus for me because I had to work during my stay in the city. The interior design of the bedroom was quite unique compared to some of the hotels I've stayed in before, the painting was a nice touch. Again, it felt more like an upscale version of a hostel.

The huge painted table

The restaurant follows the same design pattern of the other rooms and facilities, with a modern touch. I liked how spacious the restaurant felt, with the huge painted table and quirky chairs.

The hearty breakfast was filling and delicious. I ordered the bacon and sausage meal and the Filipino option during my 2 night stay.

For lunch before I left, I had the slow stewed beef curry with carrots, potato and coconut milk. The beef was at the right texture and flavor with enough of a spicy kick. The serving was large enough for 2-3 people, I had a difficult time finishing the dish because of the size of the serving (this is a good thing).

I capped off my meal with a delectable dessert, a chocnut cheesecake with peanut bar and mango puree. Diners can choose from shakes and juices, and other desserts after having a hearty meal.
Although a bit on the pricey side, you get what you pay for; the ambiance, service and serving size offer good value for money.

Location
The location of the hotel just beside a main road is ideal. It is located just in front of a souvenir shop for guests who want to go on a last minute shopping spree for pasalubongs. Many public vehicles also pass by, making it easier to get to the city center or other places in Puerto Princesa. It is also near the airport, which is a definite plus for guests.

Pricing
Canvas Boutique isn't a budget hotel (with many cheaper options in Puerto Princesa), with room prices around P4,000+++ to more than P5,000+++ per night. However, you get good value for money for what you pay.

The staff from the receptionist to the security guards to the cleaning men and women were all willing to help and gave a greeting or smile. The hotel also provides free airport shuttle for guests, which is a plus.
