As many as 409 Americans could be killed over the long Independence Day Weekend and another 45,000 injured according to the National Safety Council. That sounds just crazy!
Due to the rise in highway fatalities in recent months and years, the upcoming weekend could be the most deadly as a result of motor vehicle crashes.
If the safety group’s prediction is accurate, it could be the highest fatality and injury numbers for a Fourth of July holiday since 2008. According to NSC, the increase in roadway fatalities in addition to Independence Day falling on a Saturday, could contribute to increased death toll.
What Can You Do To Make Highways Safer for You and Your Family?
Buckle up
Seatbelts are expected to save 155 lives during the three-day holiday and another 99 Americans would be saved if they also buckled up according to NSC estimates
Put Children in Appropriate Safety Seats
Appropriately installed child car safety seats are credited with saving 100’s of children’s lives every year.
Reduce Your Speed
There are more speed-related fatalities that occur in the summer months. Don’t be in a rush—allow plenty of time to reach your destination.
Avoid Distracted Driving Behavior
Avoid distracted driving including activities such as using your cell phone or texting while behind the wheel.
Lastly, but maybe most importantly……………Do NOT Drink and Drive
Driving under the influence is the number one largest cause of motor vehicle accidents.
Summer is typically the a high-exposure period with many more miles driven on average and several holiday weekends.
On average, there are 37 percent more highway fatalities on July 4 than the average July day
Focus on Safety
While I understand “focusing on safety” and public safety reminders can seem like nagging to many, a little nagging or planning is nothing compared to actually being in a motor vehicle crash that could have been avoided.
