Hi hijabis and fashionistas around the blogosphere and around the world! Today will be another fashion post touching a little about Muslim women. Just a little bit as I believed I have only limited knowledge about the subject. Are you a hijabi who loves fashion and still can’t let go of your fashion sense even with your hijab on? This post aim to give fashion tips and to highlight some fashion blunders to hijabis who are just starting out on their noble endeavor. However this doesn’t in any way intend to replace the established principle of modesty in Islamic point of view as far as women’s clothing is concerned. There are qualified people we can seek help from when we want to get sound basis on the matter pertained and definitely this blog isn’t one of them. If you’re a hijabi who is still caught in between the whispers of catwalk and modesty, then this post might help you with your struggle. First, we have to understand that hijab, an arabic term does not only refers to outer garment worn by Muslim women to conceal what is needed to be concealed save for the face and hands. You can find my other posts on hijab here and here. Hijab is not only limited to scarves worn on top of your head or the loose-fitting clothes you are wearing. Hijab is all about modesty inside out.

Common Hijabi Fashion Blunders

As a hijabi starter, it would be natural to step on some of “hijabis- no no” codes. Don’t worry ladies, everyone almost got into that predicament. For someone who grew up in the west or in any community with Muslim minorities, it isn’t that easy to put on hijab given all the tease here and there. The very fact you took the initiative to start to hijabify yourself, you have to congratulate yourself. It’s always safer to get into a support group who will be there to back you up when everyone else are trying to put you down. In time, you’ll be able to perfect your hijab while still enjoying your fashion style. Here are some of the fashion blunders most hijabis crossed in on their first few months and years of transformation.

1. Wearing too-tight long sleeve top.
2. Wearing too-skinny jeans.
3. Wearing three-fourth or short-sleeve blouses.
4. Wearing skirts with slit exposing the legs.
5. Wearing turban exposing the neck.
6. Wearing too flashy and glittery clothes that attract attraction.
7. Wearing see-through skirts and blouses.
8. Wearing short blouses with jeans that exposes the bum.
9. Wearing body-hugging long sleeve long dress.
10.Allowing bangs to peep on from the headscarf.

Are you guilty of the above blunders? We are in one way or another. Sometimes, our inner voice keeps telling us how dull our look can be if we will totally let go of our fashion sense. Believe me, it isn’t easy. But with strong determination, we will be able to defeat all those fears and would begin to see fashion in different perspective. The good news is, you can always hijabify any outfit and turn it into hijab-friendly clothing. Don’t fret ladies! You can always be the girl who enjoy colors and style yet keeping it all modest and simple.

Hijabi Fashion Tips

As I said, there are numerous ways to hijabify your outfit without the guilty feeling of transgressing modesty. Here are some fashion tips you can employ and see for yourself how it would work for you. After all, fashion is an individual statement and more than getting the right look, fashion is about feeling comfortable about yourself.

1. If you have to wear a body-hugging top, then make sure to layer on some loose blouse on top.
2. If wearing jeans is inevitable for you, make sure not to wear too-tight skinny jeans and wear long blouse to cover your bum.
3. Wearing short-sleeve blouses can be remedied by wearing long sleeve top underneath to conceal your army’s skin.
4. Wearing a maxi skirt should be considered when wearing hijab as it provides good coverage and ease. If you want to wear skirt with slit, make sure that its opening isn’t that full to expose your legs and do wear leggings underneath.
5. I know turbans became a hijabi fad nowadays, I personally don’t like it but if you found it chic and want to don one, make sure to wear turtle neck top or neck scarves to cover the skin.
6. If you are one of those ladies who love flashy and glittery colors and want to make it a part of your hijabi fashion style, you might want to consider adding a touch of it to your accessories but not to the whole outfit. Attracting too much attention is losing the essence of hijab altogether. You can infuse your love for those colors to your bag, belts, shoes, jewelleries or scarf details.
7. Try to wear skirts made from opaque materials rather than see-through ones. Alternate the design according to the season in your country to add a little bit if excitement.
8. Wearing short blouses can be altered by wearing long top that provides extra coverage of your behind.
9. It feels so feminine to wear long dresses but not the body-hugging type. Consider investing on maxi dress paired with boleros or jackets.
10. Wearing hijab means concealing your hair no matter how lustrous and shiny your locks are. Wear underscarves to avoid hair from peeping out.

Now, we already learned some tips on how to turn our outfit into hijab-friendly, it’s time for some tips on how to make your hijab get-up pleasant to the eye. Are you ready?

1. To avoid looking too-geometric, avoid wearing headscarf and dress with the same or similar designs. It’s always appealing to wear a plain scarf when donning a printed dress and vice versa. The last thing you wanna be is to look like a clown.
2. Wearing alibaba jeans or square pants would be a very good alternative for jeans. It’s loose and comfy.
3. Although contrasting colors are making a huge trend in fashion industry now, wearing complementing colors would be safer if you are a newbie who doesn’t know how to mix and match yet.
4. Invest on cardigans, jackets and boleros. They always save you when you want to wear a sleeveless top or dress.
