Layering is a must in Chicago. To me, early fall weather in Chicago is truly perfect. Yet one never knows when the temperature may suddenly spike, plummet, or the skies will open up, leaving you looking like you took last place in a wet t-shirt contest after your 15 second walk from the grocery store parking lot to the store's entrance (not that that happened to me this week or anything...).
My trick to a well layered outfit is mixing up the fabrics and textures. I love the juxtaposition of light and airy pieces (like my chiffon skirt) when paired with heavier, more structured items (like my surplus jacket). Not to mention it's a great way to transition your favorite summer clothes into the fall!
