As part of a continued investment in the future not only of home technology, but also in the young designers who will bring us the world of tomorrow, Electrolux has announced the theme for their next annual Design Lab competition: Creating Healthy Homes.

Since one of the recurring factors that Electrolux expects the competitors to consider is a more densely populated urban environment. Cleanliness and health become increasingly important and more difficult to address in this challenging environment. Our homes will be a key part of humanity’s better health in the future.

To that end, Electrolux is looking for fresh ideas in the Design Lab competition, with a 5,000 Euro prize and a six month internship for the winner.

“Homes become more important as the challenges in the urban environment grow and as a result we want our homes to be the center of relaxation and peace of mind,” said Stefano Marzano, Chief Design Officer of Electrolux. “Design Lab is one way for Electrolux to build an innovation culture. In 2014 we are looking forward to receiving creative ideas on the theme Creating Healthy Homes, to help shape the future of people’s everyday lives into a positive direction and present propositions that envision healthy and sustainable lifestyles.”

The competition will open for entrants in March 2014. Judges will select the best submissions, which will be displayed on the Design Lab website and give the students international exposure. As the competition progresses, the students will develop their products further, keeping a public development blog to share their thought processes and inspiration. Electrolux experts will support the competitors with their professional experience and feedback.

The 2014 Design Lab Competition will be concentrated in three focus areas: culinary enjoyment, fabric care, and air purification. Students must submit designs that are a product, accessory, consumable or service in one of the three focus areas.

Last year’s winner of the Design Lab competition was a design concept for a swarm of meaning cleaning robots and their mobile “hive” called Mab. The winning entry was one of over 1,700 submissions from over 60 countries. The theme of the 2013 competition was “Inspired Urban Living.”

The 2014 Design Lab competition marks the 12th year of Electrolux’s commitment to inspiring, encouraging, and equipping the next generation of designers. Not only is there a substantial monetary award, but the six-month paid internship at Electrolux gives the winner crucial real-world experience in the research and development of the appliances of our future. Electrolux reports that half of the Design Lab winners so far have gone one to work for Electrolux after graduation.

This commitment to future generations is one of the reasons we at Goedeker’s are proud to provide Electrolux appliances at our store.
