I had been with my current partner for about 5 years and was dropping my brother in laws baby’s changing bag off as they left it at our house (they live in a tower block of flats not very nice) and we were sat chatting in the car, when a young man in about his 20s walked by and climbed into the back of my car.
He told me to take him to town and I just said sorry I’m not going that way, he then pulled out a knife and nun chucks (whatever there called) and started swearing so I drove carefully to town following the main roads that I knew cctv would be on the way.
I could tell he was on drugs, he was ranting and raving and the next min laughing and joking with us. He put his knife up to my partners throat (my partner was sat in front and the crazy man was sat in back) then he asked for money, we just gave him what we had ( not much as we were students and 17).
He then started saying how he was going to take us in a back alley and slice us open. I got there calmly and just stopped right in the center of town. He got out and was laughing saying oh why don’t you come for a pint? Then he went.
I drove straight to the police station where we went out in a patrol car trying to find him and went back to the station to give statements. They took my car for forensic and gave us a lift home. We got home about 3oclock early hours in the morning. It didn’t click what had just happened.
We had to do an identity parade. I had counseling from victim support, I just couldn’t get my head around what just happened and I couldn’t sleep, my doctor prescribed me sleeping tablets and I started to self-harm. I had never done this before but it seemed to get my frustration out. I did it on my ankle so no one would see until my partner did see the ugly marks and I broke down and I vowed I would stop and with his support I did.
The man who did this was caught and charged and appeared in court with other charges against him, like beating his mom up and trashing her house too.
I hate going out in the dark now and always lock my car door. He was charged for 5 years in prison and yes I am scared he will come out and find me for getting him sent to prison but I will not let the low life win and beat me.
