Grammar Friday

Grammar FridayToday’s two grammar tips:

  • A missile homes in on a target. It doesn’t hone in, even though this mistake seems to be growing in popular usage. “Hone” means to sharpen. You can remember this by thinking about homing pigeons, who always find their way home, even over extremely long distances. (Thanks to Ned Maniscalco for suggesting this grammar tip.)
  • “To” is a preposition, and it begins a prepositional phrase such as “to the store” or an infinitive verb form such as “to go.” “Two” is a number. “Too” is an adverb that means “excessively” or “also.”
