General Motors has become the 1st Fortune 50 Company to launch a site on a new gTLD domain, in this case GeneralMotors.green

Although other bloggers have pointed out Fortune 50 companies have acquired and activated new gTLD domain names, they are mostly re-directing the new gTLD domains to existing .com sites.

GM maybe the 1st to actually launch a targeted site on a new gTLD without re-directing to  another domain name especially a .com.

Moreover not only is GM using the .green domain name for an actual site, but the subject matter of the site is clearly falls clearly within the  .green message.

It’s not another GM site for selling cars instead GM wanted to put up a site about their Green products.

General Motors .Green site is dedicated to its Green products;  GeneralMotors.Green

Sharon Basel, Sustainability Communications Manager of General Motors said about the initiative:

“At General Motors, we see every day as Earth Day and every day we are making progress in reducing our environmental impact and footprint. We see .green as a channel dedicated to sustainability where we will be able to get this message across and cut through the Internet clutter in reaching our stakeholders and customers”

To be clear this is not a domain name that General Motors just registered in Sunrise and then figured out how to use it.

Instead GM reached out to the .Green Registry proactively wanting to put up a site dedicated to their .Green Message

I’m told Gm.green will also be the property of General Motors once the domain clears collision and GAC concerns over two letter domains

Congrats to General Motors and the .Green registry breaking in the top Fortune 50.
