Getting Wet @ Saklikent Gorge

By Annieuncanny

Sakligent Gorge (“Hidden Valley”) is a 18 km long gorge and 300 metres deep, making it the longest and deepest gorge in Turkey. The water is always cold, and make the rock slippery. Due to natural conditions it is impossible to reach the end of the gorge, only 4 km is walkable by visitors. The water rises during the winter months so therefor the attraction is only open to visitors during summer. The highlight of the walk are the waterfalls, and the magnificent view of course. The latter of a character that you cannot capture on camera and get all the details as the walls of the canyon are too high above the ground.

Visit Saklikent Gorge if you… haven’t seen a gorge before, are looking for a picturesque spot near Ölü Deniz (Turkey), want to do something different than licking sun and bathing on the Turquoise Coast of Turkey, like walking and maybe even want to try rafting.

Saklikent Gorge – Food not so impressing…

…but sitting by the water and eating your food is nice :-)

Don’t go to Saklikent Gorge if you… don’t like to get your hands dirty, are looking for a authentic Turkish food experience, have bad knees, or if you don’t intend to get wet. The only way to get there is to cross a river that comes up to your waist, but this is only at the starting point and it gets better after this. Also there are places where you will have to climb over huge rocks and this is not optimal if you are disabled.

Saklikent Gorge – Finally crossed the river!

Make it a unique experience… Just getting there can be fun and ‘different’ if you choose to take a local bus rather than go on an organized tour. Of course it is more dangerous as well as there are no seatbelts, and if your driver is anything like the one I had you will be holding on to your seat for dear life. True story. Organized walking tours are offered, but if you want to take pictures without 50 other people in the picture then do the walk on your own (preferrably with a partner since the surface is slippery and can be dangerous).

Make it cheap... by taking the local bus to Saklikent (last stop), bringing your own rubber shoes, taking your own pictures, and do the walking tour on your own.

A few hours later after arrival… turning back as we did not want to swim our way to a new waterfall.
We took a lot of great pictures and got very wet, mission well completed!
