Get Out & About for the Week of September 23, 2012

By Ohsocynthia @OhSoCynthia
One of the things I love about Dallas, is that there is no shortage of things to do.  Educational, cultural, culinary, charitable, fashion-oriented, spiritual... you want it, Dallas serves it up! Every week there are literally dozens of options to entertain and enlighten yourself or create moments that you'll carry with you for a lifetime. Here are my highlights for this week:
Get Out & About for the week of September 23, 2012
Operation Kindness will host their 18th Annual Dog Day Afternoon event next Saturday, September 29 from 10AM to 2PM at Flag Pole Hill Park at White Rock Lake.  Families are invited to bring their pooches and enjoy a plethora of activities such as:
Vendors will be giving away free items including: dog food, treats and toys  |  Canine contests:  Best Costume, Stupid Pet Tricks, Doggie Bulldozer, Best Pooch Smooch)  |  Food trucks  |  Live music  |  Pet psychic  |  Free goodie bags for the first 1,000 people  |  Face painting for the kids  |  Free microchipping for the first 40 dogs sponsored by Natural Balance Pet Foods
..and all of this is FREE of charge!
Get Out & About for the week of September 23, 2012 Help support the North Texas Food Bank through an event called Peanut Butter Blitz on Saturday the 29th from 2-4PM at Stonebriar Center in Frisco by the Nordstrom Entry on level one.
Hosted by NBC News Anchor, Mark Hayes, former Dallas Cowboy Tony Casillas and stars of Big Rich Texas, Melissa and Maddie Poe, this event is a food drive to collect peanut butter and raise awareness for the North Texas Food Bank.
Now, you may be asking, “Why peanut butter?!” Turns out that peanut butter has a high nutritional value and it’s typically in low supply at the food bank due to its high price.

Get Out & About for the week of September 23, 2012 Lastly, one of my FAVORITE events of the year – The State Fair of Texas opens Friday, Sept. 28 and will run through October 21. I take my family to the Fair every year, so I always like to know what’s NEW.
This year, an old time Fair Park tradition, the swan paddle boats, will be replaced by an ancient Chinese tradition as the Chinese Lantern Festival lights up the lagoon for the first time. By day, the display will showcase Chinese art in the form of giant animals, buildings and stories. By night, the same pieces will morph into a glowing display of color as the lantern sets are illuminated from within.
Get Out & About for the week of September 23, 2012 This Saturday, you can see Kevin Costner & Modern West play live on the Main Stage (did you even know Kevin Costner was in a band?!).
For me, the Fair is all about the food. Fried foods to be exact. This year, we have some fun new entries onto the State Fair fried food scene… Deep Fried Jambalaya won the media award for “Best Taste”. The “Most Creative” winner was for a Sweet Bacon Cinnamon Roll – which has been dipped in pancake batter and topped with fried bacon crumbles. Other entries include Fried Cactus Bites, Picnic on a Stick (which is pieces of spicy fried chicken alternating with tater tots and dill pickle slices), Mac ‘n’ Cheese Sliders, Deep Fried Chocolate Tres Leches Cake, Fried Pork Wing and Fried Mexican Fire Crackers (a spicy chicken, cheese and jalapeno mix wrapped in fresh-made masa dough and deep).
General admission to the 2012 State Fair of Texas is $16. But there are discounts and deals all over the place. Click here to see a complete list of discounts, deals and special offers – so you’ll have more money for tickets to consume all those fried foods!
