KBM Resources Group is an independently-owned natural resources consulting firm based in Thunder Bay, Ontario.  We work primarily in resource-based sectors such as mining, forestry, utilities and renewable energy, serving clients in industry, government, First Nations and NGOs.

A core part of our business is KBM’s Aerial Survey and Geomatics Division. KBM captures airborne data using two company-owned aircraft equipped with LiDAR, digital aerial cameras and thermal infrared sensors.  KBM also recently became the Canadian distributor of Hawkeye UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicle).

We operate a full processing lab equipped with state of the art software for GPS and inertial data processing, photogrammetry, point cloud editing, image processing and a wide variety of GIS and CAD applications.

We have over 30 staff, and we are growing!  KBM is seeking enthusiastic, skilled geomatics analysts to join our team.  The successful candidates will be working in our Thunder Bay office under the supervision of the geomatics manager and will be part of a team focussed on developing and delivering a wide range of geomatics services.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Prepare flight plans for aerial survey missions;
  • Field work including GPS (global positioning system) data collection, in-flight system operator, UAV support
  • Airborne IMU (inertial measurement unit), GPS and LiDAR data processing and digital image development
  • Aerial triangulation and orthoimage production, point cloud analysis and topographic mapping
  • Project tracking and quality control
  • Compile, edit and map GIS data and support GIS requirements on various consulting projects;
  • Development of new products including tools for web-delivery, tools and techniques for improved workflow efficiency, and other customized applications; and
  • Research and professional development to ensure KBM maintains a leadership position in geomatics.

Required Competencies:

  • Undergraduate degree or college diploma related to geomatics (GIS, remote sensing, surveying) or natural resources (e.g. forestry, biology, geology, geography, environmental studies/science, etc.)
  • GIS proficiency
  • Knowledge of basic remote sensing and photogrammetry principles
  • Technical writing skills
  • Ability to work independently, problem solve and take initiative
  • Attention to detail and pride of workmanship
  • Recent graduate (**NOHFC intern only)

Additional Assets:

  • Willingness to travel and fly in small aircraft
  • Related work experience and/or proficiency in relevant software (e.g. Inpho suite, ESRI, Terrascan, etc.)
  • Access to personal vehicle
  • Current First Aid certificate
