GarageIndiePopRockShit: An Interview With The German Band “Mary Goes Wild”

Posted on the 12 September 2014 by Comicspolitics

From Germany evolved a whole bunch of internationally successful bands like “Einstürzende Neubauten” or “The Notwist”. But if you take a closer look you see that there also exists a wide independent music culture. One who belongs to it, a band from Munich, “Mary Goes Wild”. In an interview they gave us insights into their band and the underground music scene.

Where does your love to music come from?
Hearts, Heads and Balls.

What meaning does music have in your life and how much time do you dedicate to it?
We listen to music as much as we can spare time for it. And making music not just happens in our rehearsel cell. We try things for ourselves at home, mostly every one seperatly and then we try to work on it and if it´s fits, then it fits and if not, then not.

And what musical education do you have? A professional or a self-taught one?
Self-taught… you can probably hear it.

Tell me how you guys got started? How did you meet?
At first, it was an online love and now it´s physical, as well.

Who came up with the name “Mary Goes Wild”?
Freddy, our drummer… it got stuck in his mind for years and after a few bad attempts, now it kinda works.

What has been your biggest challenge as a band? Have you been able to overcome that challenge?
The biggest challenge is to spent for and with the band and music. Sometimes it works quite well, but canceling some things is not unusal, but that´s ok, so far.

What bands or musicians inspire you? What are your musical influences?
The Black Lips, FIDLAR, Dune Rats, Ty Segall, Wavves and much more GarageIndiePopRockShit.

Tell me about your usual songwriting process.
One is coming up with a more or less worked out idea. We try to keep it as simple as possible. It can be much harder to write a simple pop song, than to compose a overwhelming rock song. But to be honest, we´re not very good instrumentalists and singers.

And what do you want to express with your music?
Actually nothing. If you wanna see or feel something in our music, that´s fine with us, but don´t think, that we had any intentions or something.

Discribe the music scene in Munich. Are there record labels for independent bands?
There´s no real music scene in Munich or we haven´t found it yet.

How do you produce and finance your music?
DIY!

How do you spread and distribute your music in general? What do you think about online music sharing?
We´re big fans of the internet distribution stuff. We use all the common plattforms, like Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Instagram, Soundcloud etc. and we have a homepage of course.
It´s cool, to have something physical, like a CD or a Vinyl, but honestly, almost everybody uses the Internet to listen and to buy and to share music, so it´s just logic, to use all the opportunities. Spotify is THE shit.

Who handles your daily activities like booking the concerts? Is it difficult to get gigs?
We all do, but mostly Danny. We contact clubs, festivals and other bands to get gigs, but if you have no name in the biz, it´s not easy to play live somewhere. We´re working on it.

Tell me about your future projects. Anything you would like to share, from new merch to upcoming shows or songs?
We´re working on our first album, that will be released in the beginning of 2015 and in the meantime, we´re planning some live gigs. We´re playing an 8 minute gig in November and a little bit longer in February. Who wants to be updated subscribes to our newsletter. http://www.marygoeswild.com/free-downloads/
