French Luxe Master Bedroom Tour (On a Budget)

French Luxe Master Bedroom Tour by Chic CaliforniaSlowly but surely I have taken you on a tour of most of my house. You’ve seen the living room and the family room. And my office makeover too. The guest room and man cave (yes, there’s a man cave!) are still works in progress and not fully ready for their reveals. But there is a space in my home that is ready for it’s debut…..The Master Bedroom! I would call my style in this room French Vintage. Or maybe French Luxe! (if you follow me on Facebook you’ll already know that luxe is my new favorite design word!) A little black, a little gold, a little glam and a little vintage all rolled into one. Except this room has come together over time with champagne tastes and a beer budget.

I love my furniture in this room! We bought it just before my oldest son was born 10 years ago. We had been living with my childhood furniture and that was all repainted for the nursery. We needed some grown up furniture! My first instinct was to purchase all white furniture, but I didn’t want my bedroom to be too feminine for the hubby. I think it’s important to consider everyone’s style when decorating your home. So I went with black.

We lived in Pennsylvania at the time and I drove all over that state looking for this furniture! This was before the distressed furniture trend was popular and finding black furniture with some distressing was nearly impossible. But I finally found it.

After 10 years, I haven’t regretted our purchase!

Nightstand

The hubby got the matching night stand. But I indulged my love for shabby chic with a white pedestal table from Ballard Designs. We also have a matching high boy and an armoire. But sadly the armoire has to live downstairs in this house because it won’t fit in this room! I do have lots of room for my vintage finds in my bedroom. I found this dress form at a local vintage store and I love it in the corner, especially with the angel wings.

I didn’t want to hang anything too heavy above the bed in case of an earthquake. Hopefully these frames won’t hurt too bad if they  fall on our heads (actually I have some museum putty securing these on to the wall just in case!)

I put together this display on the cheap by spray painting a hodgepodge of mismatched picture frames all one color. Instant art!

I found my bed linens on clearance at Restoration Hardware a few years ago. The set is Belgian linen and it just gets softer with every washing.

Paris Art

I put together a mini gallery of french style artwork that I have collected over the years. I frequently shop the art gallery section at stores with french names like Targét. And then I topped it off with a hand made arrow made from reclaimed wood.

Under the window, I have my Mom’s old Lane Chest. It needs some new faux pulls in the center and I painted it white a long time ago. It’s possibly one of the first pieces of furniture I ever painted. I love this chest because it gives me a little extra storage for clothes and blankets.

Cane Chairs in Chic California Master Bedroom Makeover

I found these cane chairs at an estate sale. They were party of a dining table set that I painted but I split up the set because I couldn’t part with these chairs. I still need to change the fabric on the seat. I’m thinking I will use a grain sack. I haven’t decided if I will paint them. Should I? Or Shouldn’t I?

John Cavenough hat box

I know this hat box isn’t French but it couldn’t be more perfect in my bedroom. I’d been looking for a hat box for awhile to actually store a hat, when I came across this vintage one at The Spotted Cow where I have my retail space. I snapped it up!

Standard Biscuit Co Container

I also found this metal box at The Spotted Cow. I still need to clean it out a bit but I plan to store scarves in it. I added some felt to the bottom so that it won’t scratch the furniture. I’m always on the look out for unique vintage items like this.

I have some little treasures and little things I love in this 3 tier tray.

White Side Table Chic California

This vintage milk crate contains all the stuff that piles up by my bed since I don’t have storage in my night stand.  Along with my vintage dress form, it also helps hide the attic access door in the corner of the bedroom.

I found these frames at Target recently and made some instant art by adding some French printables I found on The Graphics Fairy.

It’s really amazing how authentic and old these French documents look. Fresh from my own printer!
