Materials: ·DK weight yarn (For this pattern I used Bernat Softee Baby Yarn.) ·Size G crochet hook (4.25mm) ·White worsted weight yarn (flower accent). ·Optional: crochet thread or decorative button for the center of the flower. ·Yarn needle.
Abbreviations: Ch = Chain stitch Sc = Single crochet Hdc = Half double crochet Dc = Double crochet Sl st = slip stitch FPHDC = front post double crochet BPHDC = back post double crochet
Special stitches: Double crochet criss cross:Skip the next stitch and dc in the following stitch.Cross over the front of your dc and crochet a dc in the stitch you just skipped.
Front post half double crochet (FPHDC):Yarn over and insert your hook from front to back between the posts of the first and second half double crochet of the row below, and then from back to front again between the posts of the second and third stitches. Back post half double crochet (BPHDC):Yarn over and insert your hook from back to front between the posts of the first and second half double crochet in the row below, and then from front to back again between the posts of the second and third stitches.Complete the half double crochet as usual. Pattern: To begin, with your baby yarn and size G crochet hook, ch 2. Round 1:Nine sc stitches in the second ch from hook.Sl st to the top of the first sc to join the round. (9 sts) Round 2: Ch 2, hdc into the same space as the ch 2, 2 hdc in next stitch and each stitch around. Sl st to the top of the beginning ch 2 to join the round. (18 sts). Round 3:Ch 2, hdc into the same space as the ch 2, *1 hdc into the next stitch, 2 hdc into the following stitch*.Repeat from * to * around.Sl st to the top of the beginning ch 2 to join the round. (27 sts) Round 4:Ch 2, hdc into the same space as the ch 2, * 1 hdc into the next 2 stitches, 2 hdc into the following stitch*.Repeat from * to * around. Sl st to the top of the beginning ch 2 to join the round. (36 sts) Round 5:Ch 2, hdc into the same space as the ch 2, *1 hdc into the next 3 stitches, 2 hdc into the following stitch*.Repeat from * to * around.Sl st to top of the beginning ch 2 to join the round. (45 sts) Round 6:Ch 2, hdc into the same space as the ch 2, *1 hdc into the next 4 stitches, 2 hdc into the following stitch*.Repeat from * to * around. Rounds 7-12 will be worked using the double crochet criss cross stitch.
Round 7-12:Ch 3, Wrap the yarn around the hook once and insert the hook into the last hdc of the previous round, yarn over and pull up a loop. There are now three loops on your hook.Yarn over and pull through the first two loops, yarn over and pull through the remaining loops (Your first double crochet criss cross has been made).*Skip the next stitch and dc in the following stitch.Cross over the front of your dc and crochet a dc in the stitch you just skipped*Repeat this around.Sl st to the top of the beginning ch 3 to join the round. (27 dc criss crosses made).

Round 13: Ch 2, hdc in the next st and in each st around. Sl st to the top of the beginning ch 2 to join the round. Round 14:Ch 2, *FPHDC around the next stitch from the previous round, BPHDC in the following stitch from the previous round* Continue repeating the FPHDC and BPHDC.Sl st to top of beginning ch 2 to complete the round.Tie off yarn and sew in the tail.

Flower:
Layer 1: This flower is crocheted in two, separate layers and then sewn together onto the hat. Using size G crochet hook and white yarn ch 5 and sl st to form a ring.. Round 1: Ch 1, *sc and then ch 3* 5 times in the loop, join with sl st to beginning ch to join the round. Round 2: Ch 1, *sc, hdc, 5 dc, hdc, s*) in each ch 3 space from previous round.Join with sl st to beginning ch to join the round. Five petals made.Tie off yarn leaving a 12” tail.

Layer 2: Round 1:Ch 3, 11 hdc into the 3rd ch from the hook. Sl st to the top of the beginning ch 3 to join the round. (12 hdc) Round 2:Ch 2, hdc in same st, 2 hdc in following st and each st around. Sl st to top of the beginning ch 2 to join the round.(24 hdc) Round 3:Ch 7 (counts as 1st sc + ch 6), skip two stitches as sc in the next stitch.*Ch 6, skip two stitches and sc in the following st.* repeat from * to * around. Sl st to first ch to join the round. (8 chain spaces made). Round 4:Ch 1, (sc, hdc, 2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc, hdc, sc) in each ch 6 space from the previous round. Sl st to beginning ch 1 to join the round.Tie off and weave in loose end.

Assembly: Place the first flower layer on top of the second layer. Place both layers on the hat in your desired location.Using the 12” tail from the first round, sew both layers of the flower onto the hat. *Optional Accent:A decorative button or crochet button can be used in the center of the flower as an accent.Be careful of buttons as they may cause a choking hazard. To crochet a button: Round 1: Take your size G crochet hook and crochet thread. Ch 3, 11 hdc into the third ch from the hook.Sl st to top of the beginning chain to join the round. Round 2: Ch 1, sl st in next stitch and each stitch around.Join with a sl st to top of the beginning ch 1.Tie off leaving a 6” tail. Use the tail to sew the crochet button to the center of the flower.Tie off yarn and weave in all loose ends.
