Free Crochet Pattern: Minion Cozy Case

Inspired by the movie Despicable Me this adorable little case is meant to hold a smartphone or iPod touch but could also be used to hold many different things.
Just a few suggestions:
Adults: Credit cards, business cards, makeup, cash, keys
Kids: Trading cards, small toys, crayons, toy phones.
The case measures approximately 3" wide and 5 1/2" tall
The case is really quick to make and would make a very unique stocking stuffer.
Materials:
-Worsted Weight Yarn in
Blue, Yellow, White, Gray and
Black
-Size H crochet hook
-Needle
Gauge:
4 hdc = 1”
3rows of hdc =1”
Abbreviations:
sc - single crochet
hdc- half double crochet
sl st - slip stitch
ch - chain
st - stitch
Minion Body
With blue yarn and size H crochet hook, form a slip knot leaving a 12” tail, (the tail will be used to sew the bottom of the case closed later in the pattern.) Insert your crochet hook and chain 24. Slip stitch to the first st made to form a ring.
Round 1: Ch 2, hdc in each chain st around. Sl st to top of ch 2 to join the round.
Round 2-6: Repeat Round 1.
Tie off blue yarn and slip stitch with yellow yarn to join.
Round 7: Ch 2, hdc in each stitch around. Sl st to top of ch 2 to join the round.
Round 8-12: Repeat Round 7.
Tie off yellow yarn and slip stitch with black yarn to join.
Round 13 -14: Ch 2, hdc in each st around. Sl st to top of ch 2 to join the round.
Tie o ff black and slip stitch with yellow yarn to join.
Round 15: Ch 2, hdc in each st around. Sl st to top of ch 2 to join the round.
Round 16: Ch 1, sc in next st and in each st around. Sl st to ch 1 to join round.
Creating the closing loop: Ch 22, skip 5 sts and slip stitch in the 6th stitch.
Tie off yarn.
Minion Eye
Starting Option 1: With black yarn form a magic ring. Ch 1, sc 6 times in the ring.
Sl st to top of 1st sc to join the round.
Starting Option 2: With black yarn, ch 2. 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Sl st to top of
1st sc to join the round.
Tie o ff black yarn and slip stitch with white yarn to join.
Round 2: Ch 1, sc in same stitch as ch 1, 2 sc in next st and in each st around. Sl
st to top of ch 1 to join the round.
Tie o ff white yarn leaving a 6” tail. You will later use this chain to sew the eye
onto the front of the minion case. Sl st with gray yarn to join.
Round 3: Ch 1, *2sc in next st, 1 sc in the following st.* Repeat all the way
around. Sl st to top of ch 1 to join.
Tie o ff gray yarn.
Finishing
Flatten the case. With your needle and 12” blue tail at the bottom of the case, sew the bottom of the case closed from one side to the other. Tie off the excess blue yarn.
Using the needle, weave in all loose ends on the case. Turn case inside out. This will be the outside of the case.
Using the 6” white tail and the needle, sew the eye onto the front, center of the outside of the case over top of the black line. Make sure that the eye is on the opposite side of the closing loop.
Using the needle and black yarn, sew a mouth on your minion.
Using the needle, sew in all remaining loose ends.
Your Minion Case is Complete! Insert your phone, iPod touch or whatever item you choose and loop the closing loop over top of the Minion’s Eye
