Yesterday morning a group of local resident and forest defenders stopped logging in the Mattole River Headwaters of Humboldt County.

We engaged workers in dialog and logging was called off for the day when it was apparent that they we would not be leaving the area. Loggers were building a road in Humboldt Redwood Companies Diamondback THP number 1 – 13 – 130.

The proposed road would go through mixed conifer and hardwood forest and would facilitate helicopter yarding of old growth in the area. Company
representatives arrived shortly after workers stopped to speak with us. Saws sat idle as we made clear to industry foresters that any attempts to cut old growth would be meet with our resistance. After promising a community meeting in the following weeks, at which people could voice their concerns to HRC attempting to log old growth in the Mattole, the company officials said they would return tomorrow to continue logging. We said they would see some familiar faces.
