Complete Review: Nokia Lumia 800

After signing of partnership between Nokia and Microsoft last April, this is the Nokia 800 Lumiafirst Nokia Windows Phone 7.5 Mango (released after the HTC Titan Radar and running Mango). The Nokia Lumia 800 takes the lines of N9, who was impressed, but this time embarked Windows Phone 7 … which gives a quite fascinating and surprising result!

Design of Nokia Lumia 800:

The sleek design of Lumia 800 (almost identical to N9) is particularly successful. Profile lines are simple and fly. Once Nokia Lumia 800 smartphone in hand, we immediately understand that we are dealing with a high-end device. Moreover Nokia has nothing to learn from the best in this area as the manufacturer confirms the excellent expertise in hardware design.

Display / Contrast:

Narrower than that of his colleagues (especially that of the HTC Titan, 4.7-inch) screen, Lumia 800 houses a standard Windows Phone keypad, which may seem narrow, but is functional, thanks to the reactivity general of the screen and the performance of the predictive text input. The screen AMOLED capacitive multi ClearBlack (480 x 800) is also attractive. Even with a maximum brightness, the darkness is so deep that it is impossible to distinguish the edges of the matrix LCD black frame that surrounds it. All this gives a futuristic effect. Seen from the front, print quality is omnipresent. However, we will feel the lack of front video camera.

Use / Performance of Nokia 800 Lumia:

Technically, there is a Qualcomm MSM8255 processor simple heart clocked at 1.4 GHz which provides a gain of 400 MHz compared to the ‘OMAP 3630 which equipped Nokia N9. Here, Nokia returns to the fluidity and efficiency. On the other hand, divide the amount of memory by two in comparison to N9: as we have to be satisfied with 512 MB of RAM. However, the Lumia 800 has overcome the heavy tasks (Web, GPS), and this is without showing weakness! Finally, the design choices are walking in the footsteps of Apple. It is impossible to expand the memory via Micro SD card and the battery is not removable. For communications, the GSM module circuit is completed by a Wi-Fi (b / g / n) with d a chip Bluetooth 2.1 A2DP compatible. Again, we note the lack of NFC chip from its twin in MeeGo (N9), but we cannot say that we miss.

Navigation of Nokia 800 Lumia:

Navigation 7.5 requires Windows Phone; the Nokia Lumia 800 acquires a mobile based Internet Explorer version 9.0. The presence of heart with a single processor 512 MB of RAM left some doubt on Web performance. Fortunately, they dissipate very quickly, better than that, we show off the Lumia 800: heavy sites appear almost instantly and scrolling pages are made with a flawless flow. The usability is also enhanced with automatic resizing of paragraphs with a double tap. Innovations compared to other smartphones (the HTC Titan Radar) running Mango, Nokia includes a tool for transferring contacts from one phone to a another via Bluetooth application “transfer contacts” syncing possible with an email account with Nokia, as well as taking into account the views of consumers in the “Your opinion about Nokia”, located in the Settings. For navigation, Nokia still offers two innovative applications, Nokia Maps and Nokia Drive. In short, enough to help you when you walk on foot or by car – knowing that the performance of the Maps application proposed by Microsoft still leave much to be desired. Last application that we owe to Nokia App Highlights is mini Marketplace, just shake the smart phone for new ideas for downloading applications on the screen.

Camera / Video / Multimedia:

Picture and video capture (720p) is based on an 8 megapixel sensor (optical Carl Zeiss) providing an opening to 2.2. Not found is however, the front camera which is available in Nokia N9. It must be recognized that the 8-megapixel camera of Lumia 800 produces images of excellent craftsmanship! In photo, Lumia 800 manages to do better than S2 Galaxy (although the colors are less intense), but cannot be hoisted to an iPhone 4S. Lumia 800 still offers a good performance in teasing the best camera phones on the market, which is not an easy reference! Software layer side, Nokia does not disappoint by offering many options. We can geo-tag the photos or enable video effects (black and white, sepia, negative, solarize). Nokia also proposes to take control of some parameters of shooting (auto white balance, exposure value, sensitivity etc.).

Sharing opportunities have not been forgotten: the photos can be sent on Facebook or SkyDrive (25GB free of charge). Although the Lumia 800 fails to surpass the 720p (1080p for the Galaxy against S2 and iPhone 4S), the result is up to the expectations. MP4 AVC files of 1280 x 720 (29.9 fps) are fluid and sharp. Multimedia side, still no flash in the program, but the HTML 5 is supported. However, we still regret that the Windows Phone 7.5 “Search” button which is exclusively associated with Bing. Too bad it lacks a front camera, especially while taking a photo ID and using Skype.
