Five Ways to Combat Dandruff

By Vivianism @vivianism

What happens when dandruff strikes?

Dandruff can be caused by many reasons. It can be the weather. It can be stress. It can be due to products build up. It can also be hereditary. I have dandruff for years and it is only in the recent years that I’m concerned about it and wanted to do something about it. Not so nice wearing black and flakes appear everywhere on the shoulder.

Even though my problem has not completely disappear, it has reduced significantly and I want to share with you the top five ways I’ve tried that helps!

1. Use an exfoliator for scalp

Dandruff are pores on the scalps that get clogged. The flakes are actually the dead skin cells. Just like our face, the scalp needs regular exfoliator to. If you have been doing everything you could and dandruff is still there, it could be because you didn’t exfoliate. Kiehl’s scalp exfoliator can help to remove excess dead skin cells so that your scalps are less clogged. I could see results just from the first try. My scalp are less itchy and less flaky! Pair it with their shampoo and you will be good to go. Use the exfoliator once a week.

2. Try anti-dandruff shampoo

Selsun Blue is one of the least expensive but very effective dandruff shampoo that I’ve tried so far.  It contains selenium sulfide as the active ingredient. Selenium sulfide is an anti-fungal agent which is helping in treating scalp problems and the occurrence of it. The downside is that this product don’t smell pleasant. My bf complains every time I use this so that’s the only reason why I switched.  Alternate the shampoo with a hydrating one so that your hair won’t be dry.

Another alternative which I love is Kiehl’s scalp purifying anti-dandruff shampoo. It feels a little minty on the scalp yet not too much. The scalp also doesn’t feel that itchy anymore after using this shampoo. A little pricey but definitely worth the investment.

3. Use Phyto botanical scalp treatment

Made from 100% botanical essential oil, this product calms the scalp, bringing the scalp back to its more balance state. Apply it to the dry unclean scalp area section by section and massage it. Leave it on for at least 20 mins before shampooing. It has some sort of medicinal strong smell that not everyone can take it. I am however, very comfortable with the smell. You can use this once or twice a week.

4. Go for scalp treatment by the salon

It is great if you can go for scalp treatment regularly, say once every 3 months or so. The professionals can help to keep your scalp clean and free from product build-up. I’ve tried Shunji Matsuo Scalp Treatment and I think it is worth it! My scalp has been a lot cleaner since my last visit with them. Of course, your very own hair care is also very important!

5. Rinse your hair thoroughly

Sometimes dandruff occurs because we don’t rinse our hair long enough especially when we are in a rush. Rinse ur scalp longer so that all traces of shampoo can be removed thoroughly. Otherwise, nothing else is gonna work!
