By now, with the great majority of the populace owning a smartphone or tablet, has any boater not yet started exploring nautical apps to enhance your sailing or boating experience? While there's always the danger of any device failing, and therefore you should always have a backup for navigation and charting apps (remember paper charts?), they do offer a lot of convenience. I regularly use apps on both Apple and Android devices, including charting, tides and currents, anchoring, weather, radar, AIS, marine education and reference, and occasionally even games. If you haven't yet experienced apps in all these categories, take a look at my detailed reviews here. So far I've tested and reviewed over three dozen apps that looked promising, and some are very good while others are less so or downright rip-offs.
