Facebook “Graph Search” Looks Brilliant, But No Challenge for Google

Posted on the 16 January 2013 by Nrjperera @nrjperera

Facebook unveiled a brand new feature for the world’s number one social network yesterday during a press event. This new feature is called  Facebook “Graph Search”. Just as name suggest, it allows people to search the network site using queries like “People who like cycling” or “Photos of my friends in New York”. Basically, stalking friends and ex’s is about to get much easier.

Facebook plans to launch Graph Search with four main areas including people, photos, places, and interests. Allowing users to search about things related to these subjects. When launched, Graph Search will replace  the old search bar with a bigger one. And every time you commence a search, it will show  results for the query in a page that can be customized as the way you want.

This new tool will certainly encourage people to search more on Facebook. And it could also be a threat to your privacy as well. HuffingtonPost points out that Graph Search could show all you past stalking sessions to anyone who search for it. So, before your wife, girlfriend or parents start using this tool, clean up search history on ”Activity Log”.

Facebook Graph Search is no challenge for Google because web search and Graph Search are totally different things. Just as Facebook explains, “Web search is designed to take a set of keywords (for example: “hip hop”) and provide the best possible results that match those keywords. With Graph Search you combine phrases (for example: “my friends in New York who like Jay-Z”) to get that set of people, places, photos or other content that’s been shared on Facebook.”

In a way Facebook Graph Search is an improvement on search technology. But, that doesn’t mean it’s better than a web search engines like Google, because Graph Search only gives results from inside Facebook network. Which means the search results and sources will be limited.

Graph Search is still in development. But you can enter for a chance to try the beta version. Visit the Facebook Graph Search page for more info.
