Extreme Right Is Angry About Immigration - Public Isn't
The extreme right (and many trumpistas are angry because Donald Trump might have made a deal with Democrats -- to pass a new DACA law along with stronger border protections (but not a wall). There have even been instances of people burning their red MAGA caps in disappointment over what they see as a betrayal by Trump. They want him to keep his campaign promises to build a wall and deport all the undocumented immigrants.
I have two things to say about that:
1. How can anyone be surprised at Trump breaking a promise (i.e., lying)? He has told over 1,000 lies since taking office (by the Washington Post count). Evidently, the extreme right is just fine with all the other lies, but upset when they find a lie they don't like. Seems to me like the epitome of hypocrisy.
2. These extremist xenophobes can burn all the hats they want and throw their temper tantrums, but their view is a minority one in this country. Only 36% want a wall to be built, and only 31% want undocumented immigrants to be deported (which is a physical impossibility anyway). About 50% oppose building the wall, and 57% want undocumented immigrants given a path to citizenship. America is just not in a xenophobic mood right now.
The charts above are from a new Economist / YouGov Poll -- done between September 10th and 12th of a random national sample of 1,500 adults (including 1,313 registered voters), with a margin of error of 3.2 points.
