Event: Ulzzang 얼짱 Makeup Workshop at Jurong Point

By Beautifulbuns

There are many things in the world that don’t go together (despite being fabulous on their own). Prime examples are:

  • chocolate with bacon (yes, I’m still on my Masterchef marathon)
  • cable ties and train tracks (non-Singaporeans can read this to get the lowdown on how our train tracks are being held together)
  • me and a bikini
  • bloggers that give demonstrations at makeup workshops

Now I have nothing against Miyake, a pretty blogger who was the makeup demonstrator at Jurong Point’s Ulzzang (or rather, eoljjang 얼짱) makeup workshop last Saturday. In fact, I think she does a great job at doing the makeup technique on herself. The first time I saw her photos, I actually thought she looked pretty Korean and was raving about her to my friends “eh eh, I also wanna do this kinda makeup!”

BUT it doesn’t change the fact that she. cannot. do. a presentation. I felt sooooo bad for my readers and friends who came to support the workshop.

I mean, a lot of the girls who turned up were like lost sheep, and having a makeup presenter who only says “Ok, now we do eyeliner” and then proceeds to do her own stuff doesn’t help.

I’ve attended countless makeup workshops (with talented experts like Romeo Eun and Larry Yeo etc), and this was wayyyy subpar. I’m only hoping she didn’t get paid for this, cos if she did – Jurong Point and The Face Shop, you’d have been wayyyyyy better with me (and I don’t even like speaking in public). Even Ulrica (also a beauty blogger) gave a decent presentation at the Starlash event.

Anyhoos, here’s what went down.

A very promising illustration that unfortunately wasn’t utilised to its full potential. Section 1 is where you apply the light/shimmery eyeshadow. Line #2 is the bottom of the eye, and your eyeliner should extend out but not exceed Line #2.

A very thoughtfully prepared “menu” of makeup that we used on the day.

Makeup goodies all over the table! Am loving the chilli red patent casing travel makeup brush set that was part of the door gift.

Everything on the table was from The Face Shop, even the tissues and cotton swabs. Now this is what I call branding and product placement
:D

See that long slim black item on the extreme right..?

It’s actually this! A 2-in-1 liquid and crayon glitter liner which would have been absolutely perfect for the Ulzzang look – if Miyake had actually gotten around to using it. Or maybe she did but rushed through it and I didn’t manage to catch it.

The lip concealer that we applied to get a just-bitten effect – some makeup artists like to use foundations whilst others like Romeo use the Laneige Snow Soothing BB cushion (you can use any BB Cushion for that matter)

And the product I was uber excited about – The Face Shop’s Face It CC cream wooohahahahha. Its dispensing system is similar to the O Hui Auto Cream Cover foundation. Press the clear slim plastic down (like a button) and the CC cream will come out through the small hole in the centre.

Swatching on my hand to ensure that I got the correct shade. It has good coverage and some glow. notch bad indeed!

Le important people making le opening speeches – Lynette from Jurong Point on the left and umm I’m not sure what her name was (Valerie? No? Sorry! I’m terrible at names).

Miyake doing her thang – her interaction at the start was so minimal it felt like we’d walked in on her doing makeup for her friend instead of her presenting to us. It was only after someone from The Face Shop went up to her (maybe 35% through the demo) that she went around checking on everyone’s makeup. Towards the end, time was running out so she started rushing through an already half-arsed makeup demonstration workshop. Tsk.

Well, do we look like we have ulzzang?

So. my look at the end of the day (around 9+pm). Note the good coverage from The Face Shop’s CC cream?

I really feel so bad for the ones who turned up that I might, just might take the effort to do up a makeup tutorial blog entry on how to get the ulzzang makeup effect. 정말 미안해요 여러분~
