Etude D'un Songe

By Pmeurice
Two weeks to go before starting a new term of portraiture study - as next weekend will be spent on other purpose than Art, I spent the last two days working a small portrait study.
Here it is :

Etude d'un Songe

Etude d'un Songe

I downloaded several pictures of this model. The photograph allowed a quick study of darks and light. As always, I started trying to be as accurate as I could. Once the drawing was set, I got away from it and let my composition follow the dreamy attitude of the model. I chose a blue background, loving its association with the delicate pink of the flesh. As the model is lost in her thoughts, I thought blue was the right color to express the quietness and the intimacy inspired by her expression.
As well, I aimed this painting to be simple, I tried not to overwork it. Although one can never be really satisfied, I was able to stop there. It was expressive enough.

Continuing to learn with Oil - I start to find it easier and am not afraid anymore of laying thicker paint quantity. This week, I received a supply of new brushes : digging in my art magazines, I found  an advertisement for this company : Rosemary and Co. They produce handmade brushes in the UK. Their product is not more expensive than the brushes with can find in all art shops, but I was really happy with the brushes I tried... (finally smooth enough not to blend the paint while painting on fresh surface). Looking forward to try more, this time not working from a photograph, but from a model.
