Escape From Jonestown by @Lauloknows

By Pamelascott

Forty years ago, on Nov. 18, 1978, 914 members of a 'utopian' society deep in the Guyana jungle, known as Jonestown, drank a lethal elixir of Flavour-Aid and cyanide. Tim Carter was in the inner circle of its charismatic leader, Jim Jones. He escaped into the jungle. This is his story.

I cried like a little baby listening to the final, horrific episode of this audio show. I was familiar with the story of the mass suicide (or murder depending on your POV) in Jonestown. This was quite upsetting to listen to as it contained actual audio clips of Jim Jones (what a bloody lunatic he was) and the four people who survived Jonestown. I found the story equally fascinating and horrific. Jim Jones and his devoted followers are nothing new (think of the Children of God) but he was the worst. I feel no sympathy for Jones. I hope hell is hot enough for him. My heart breaks for his followers, who loved him, who believed his madness and who died for nothing. Jesus! The final episode takes place on Death Day. It was awful listening to descriptions of parents killing their children. Some consider Jonestown a mass murder rather than a mass suicide. I agree. The people who died were deluded and not of sound mind. They would never have taken cyanide if not for Jim Jones and his bullshit. Many bodies were found that had been injected with cyanide so that is clearly murder if you ask me.
