Engagement Rings 101 – A Primer for the Buyer

By Jonathansfinejewelers @Jon_Siegel

Engagement RingNext to buying a home, engagement rings are one of the biggest purchases you will probably make.  Here’s the thing, it’s important to know what you are doing.  I can’t say it enough times.  When you walk into meet with me or anyone else, it doesn’t matter the color, clarity or the proportions of the stone.  You will get to those things during your meeting with your diamond guy, but there are things you should know before you even get to your diamond meeting, and I am going to give you a list, which you can check twice and get those answers first to be prepared.

Engagement Rings – A Primer

What size ring does your gal wear?

More than likely you won’t have a clue.  So, you can borrow a ring from her jewelry box, but pay attention and make sure that it’s one she wears on her ring finger.  If that isn’t an option, then you can always make a standard size and have it sized later, or while your gal is sleeping take a piece of string and tie it around her finger.  Because engagement rings should fit  finger comfortably; snug enough so that it will not fall off, but loose enough to slide over her knuckle, tie it in a slip type knot and see if you can get a fairly accurate size that way.  But, don’t worry you can always size it and remember, better to be too big than too small.

What style does your gal want?

Always the best way to know is to pay attention to the clues. More than likely her friends are getting engaged and she has dropped hints all over the place.  Pick them up and put them file them away.  They will come in handy.  Also, when you are at the mall, window shop and see what she likes.  Better to know, because when you’re spending this much money, you definitely want to get her something she wants!

Is your diamond guy a good diamond guy?

I have a ton of articles for you to read about this.  For instance, an article about the Better Business Bureau.  Oh, and here’s one about return policies.  And, here is one about offering credit.  And, here is one about buying on the Internet vs. buying from a Brick and Mortar. If you need more, just shoot me an email.

What’s your budget?

Another topic that I have touched on extensively is budget.  I suggest you read this article about budget.  Also, don’t spend two months salary.  Not only is it a waste of money, it’s not necessary and the only person you are impressing is yourself, trust me on this!!

Do I need to insure the engagement ring?

YES!!!  It protects against damage, theft, or loss, and offers the wearer peace of mind for a generally
low premium.
