Eggnog: A Twist on the Traditional

By Thefoodiecoupleblog

Eggnog. One of those love it or hate it things isn’t it?  Until recently I didn’t know very much about it, apart from the fact that I really loved the flavours! I’ve even made Eggnog Cupcakes before too!

Eggnog hails from East Anglia and traditionally is made from a mix of cream, sugar, eggs, an alcoholic spirit and spice. Most people probably know the alcohol element as rum and the spice as nutmeg but really, there are lots of variations!

The ‘nog’ part of the word Eggnog is taken from the middle English word ‘noggin’ – a small carved wooden mug traditionally used to serve the drink.

The lovely folk at Waitrose Cellar asked me to put my own twist on Eggnog, using their classic basic guide ‘How To Make Eggnog’ which you can find on their Christmas Drinks Website here.

I chose to use Amaretto, as I love the almond based liqueur and to me it always seems like a Christmassy spirit. I served it up with a little bit of cinnamon, shaved chocolate and orange peel. I adhered to the amounts in the above recipe, swapping the 100ml rum, for 100ml of Disarono Ameretto.

For me, the perfect time to drink eggnog is most definitely on Christmas Eve. Surrounded by family and friends, and preferably in front of a roaring open fire! Even better, why not serve them up with some delicious little ameretti biscuits too.
