Drum Circle in HollywoodHave you ever wanted to try out a drum circle but were afraid of being trapped in a room surrounded by aging hippies that reek of patchouli oil and have crazy names like Mistress Mojave Moon? If so, the city of Hollywood Arts Park and Resurrection Drums have the solution for you. If not, it’s about time you went out and gave something new a try!

Once you’ve decided that drumming is something you’d like to try or at least witness, mosey on over to the Arts park in Hollywood every Full Moon From 7-9 PM. Once there you’ll  find Jeff Lee with his Resurrection Drums’ volunteers leading the drumming circle. His group is made up of store employees, musicians, and members of the community that want to share their passion for drums with the masses. You can stop by at any time for the drumming, but you want to get there before 7 to find yourself a seat.

You might be wondering, who goes to these things?  In the crowd you’ll find a diverse mix of backgrounds and age groups (including some of the aforementioned hippies) coming together to share in humanities oldest language. From the dawn of modern man drumming has been the foundation of music and one of the original forms of communication. If you decide to join in the fun all you need to bring is yourself

and some kind of percussion instrument. People were using  everything from snare drums to bongos to tambourines. The scene is family and pet friendly. There was even a portion of the circle dedicated to children’s drumming.

After watching for a while and feeling my feet start to tap with the beat I decided to join in

and try my hand at it. I must say at first it can be a bit tough if your rhythmically challenged, but you very quickly lose yourself in the almost hypnotic beats. Once you let go and start beating that drum the whole experience becomes very relaxing and rather cathartic. If your feeling extra wild you can even join in with chanting and howling at the moon that goes on.
Overall it’s a great experience and absolutely free to come and join in. The rest of the park is also open during the event so there is something to do with the whole family. Once the evening’s drumming wraps up there is lots to do down Hollywood Blvd. There is everything from ice cream for the kids to bars for the adults.
