Dögg Guðmundsdóttir

Art and design intertwine in the work of Copenhagen-based Dögg Guðmundsdóttir, whose creations range from the clean and contemporary to the ancient and elemental. Two major examples are her recent pieces for Ligne Roset: the rope-and-steel “Fifty” chairs designed with Rikke Rützou Arnved and two rugs whose primary motif mimics traditional Icelandic star embroidery.

Guðmundsdóttir's penchant for pared-down simplicity can be seen in the Sit Stool Basket for Nor11.

Guðmundsdóttir’s influences are tangible. She uses natural materials redolent of her roots and upbringing in Iceland and has a yen for organic shapes, perhaps a throwback from her time studying at Milan’s Istituto Europeo di Design in the early 1990s. And her pared-down simplicity—seen in the Sit Stool Basket for Nor11—has been honed in Copenhagen, where she attended the School of Design at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts.

“Copenhagen was a culture shock after coming from Italy where nobody is afraid of being different or thinking outside the box,” Guðmundsdóttir recalls. “Denmark has taught me though that in contemporary design the more you cut away, the better it looks.”
