DIY: Valentines Necklace

By Sars @RockinAroundThe

Valentines Day is coming up quick.

DIY Valentines Gift

That’s some crazy shizz, it feels like it was just Christmas.  Anyway, sometimes Valentines day totally sucks.  It’s hard for guys to buy gifts (lucky lesbians), and you have to pretend to like whatever they give you.  If you’re single, it can suck even more… but it doesn’t have to.  You can easily DIY a few gifts for your girlfriends, and party all night (or stay home and stuff your face).  Here’s how to turn out your own VDay necklace, for this purpose we’ll call it the “Key To My Heart Necklace” (sooo romantic).

DIY Key Necklace

You’ll need the following…

  • Some sort of antique (or antique like) key.  You can usually find them at any craft store for like $1.
  • Nail polish.  I like to use nail polish because it has a glossy finish.  I suppose you could make this key any color that you want, but reds signify love… so be stylish too with a deep burgundy or oxblood shade.  I used Covergirl’s Wine Stain.
  • Chain.  You can use a chain from a necklace that you already have, or buy one from a craft store.  Gold looks good with red, but I have a crush on copper.  If you don’t want to get down and dirty with chain… you can use ribbon.  Go for a nice nude tulle ribbon, it’s sexy.
  • Two jump rings and a lobster claw closure.

Valentines Gift

Set your key on a piece of cardboard, or a book covered with a paper towel/newspaper, or a swiffer box lid (that’s what I used), and start painting.  Give one side of the key a thick coat, and let it dry completely (15-20 minutes).  It’s totes ok if it looks ugly, you’re going to do a second coat that will even everything up.  Once the first side of the key is dry, flip it, and do the same to the other side.  Repeat this, so the key has two full coats of nail polish.  By the time you’re done with the second coat, the key should be dark, smooth, and glossy.

Easy Key Necklace

Secure the chain/ribbon to your key by wrapping it around.  Use wire cutters to cut the chain to your liking.  I prefer key necklaces to be on the longer side.  If you use a ribbon, you don’t have to worry about length because a bow eliminates that problem.

Attach the jump rings and lobster claw if needed.

So adorbs, this necklace is a thoughtful way to show your love.  A hand crafted necklace is wayy better than flowers that will die in a few days, or chocolate that will make someone fat… and it’s cooler than a lame heart necklace from Kay’s.

Frock You*
