Japan always comes first when we talk about the weirdest things.  This one is not really new but some of you may not know that some Japanese farmers force their fruits to grow square-shaped.

These farmers said to use square, tempered glass cases to put the watermelons while they are still growing. So, when it  why go into so much trouble? According to CNN, they are doing this because of the “lack of space”.  They sell these watermelons for about 10,000 yen that’s about $100 USD. Right now most of the farmers in Japan are doing this with several other fruits as well, not just to make more space but also to make a pile of money by fooling people.

Square watermelons does seem to fit in nicely inside a refrigerator unlike the round ones. However the expensive price makes it a bit ridiculous.  You can also try and grow a square watermelon too, there’s an Instructable for that.
