Devon on Danks

By Takeeatfoodblog
Picture Devon cafe has increased in popularity since opening it's first store on Devonshire Street. It has definitely made a name for itself, delivering a fusion of different cuisines into modern cafe dishes. I've dined in at Devon cafe on Devonshire Street a couple of times and I wasn't particularly impressed by the food or the service. The first time I went we had a very enthusiastic staff member who made the dining experience very enjoyable and the food was pretty decent but a little bit expensive for what it was. The second time round was a bit of a let down because the staff were very lost and confused and struggled a lot to help us (e.g. asking for what type of juice was available was a hard question to them) and there was a great hype on some of the specials on the menu which did not particularly impress me.
Now Devon cafe has opened up it's second cafe in Waterloo on Danks Street- introducing Devon on Danks. I saw a lot of pictures of it on social media and it seemed like Devon on Danks was offering something different and new from their other cafe. A bunch of my friends and I decided to make the effort to go try it out for ourselves. Devon on Danks is a new and better improved Devon cafe, they have truly stepped up their game and now all the negative experience and feedback I have heard about Devon cafe has been pushed away. Devon on Danks is definitely a place worth dining at!

Dr. Seuss's Green Egg and Ham | Thick cut bacon, crispy potato, 63 degree egg, green tomato ketchup, pea puree, soybeans, pea tendrils, jus | $19.00
When I saw 'Dr. Seuss's Green Egg and Ham' on the menu I knew I had to try it out! It is such a clever and cute dish that is packed full of flavor and textures. At first my friend and I thought this dish was too "green" but the pea puree is very subtle but gives a nice texture to the pork belly/ ham. The pork belly, well they called it ham but it was basically a thick generous piece of pork belly (not complaining!), was cooked to perfection. The meat was juicy and tender and melted instantly in your mouth. Call me weird but I really like the fat on the pork belly, I love the juiciness of it and how it soaks up the flavouring of the pork.  There was also a crunchy potato hashbrown below the ham, I liked out it was not oily at all and added a nice crispy texture to the dish.

Soft Shell Crab Roll ala Japanois | Soft shell crab with sichimi pepper, wasabi mayo, tobiko, nori, pickled cucumber, daikon, carrot, shiso | $18.00
The 'Soft Shell Crab Roll ala Japanois' was a light dish that was perfect for the hot weather. This is one of the few soft shell crabs which is not drenched in oil- so massive thumbs up for cooking it so nicely! The soft shell crab was complimented by pickled cucumber, daikon and carrot which gave the roll a nice tangy taste to it. I felt that it could of had a little bit of spice to lift up the flavor and give it more of the "wow" factor. But this dish is a good option if you want something filling yet light.

Little Lost Bread | Brioche French toast, fresh and freeze dried strawberries, balsamic and strawberry gastrique, strawberry cheesecake ice cream, Arnott's biscuit crumble (with bacon $4) | $16.50
Hello hello to this photogenic little lost bread! I tried the previous version of the little lost bread which was banana and hazelnut and I thought that was too sweet and heavy. This new version of the little lost bread was definitely my favorite dish out of the three. There was enough ice cream and cream to give it flavor but not overpower it with sugar. The strawberries gave the dish a very fresh taste. I also really liked how they added the freeze dried strawberries. I think Three Williams Brioche French Toast has a competitor :P

Picture Overall, the dining experience at Devon on Danks was very enjoyable. The staff were very polite and friendly, and they actually knew what they were doing! The food at Devon on Danks was definitely worth the amount we paid. I would recommend you order a few of the dishes and share it with friends, like what we did, that way you get to try the different dishes and pay for one! :) A massive thumbs up to the Devon team for stepping it up and creating something different from their original store. I will definitely be back to try the other dishes on the menu and the soft serve ice cream with chips :P
Happy eating x
