Devon Cafe, Surry Hills

So Devon Cafe seems to be the place to be at these days. After countless of weekends of my instagram feed being flooded with Devon's coffee and meals, it was time for me to check what the hype is all about. So the money question is.. did it meet all the hype?

Devon Ultimate Toastie  - $25

Actually where do I even start? Everything on the menu sounded amazing. I wanted to try everything. Fifteen minutes later and with some help from the waitress and Adam, we finally placed our orders in. Yes, I was that indecisive.
Shortly after, the food arrived and zomgosh I was so close to wetting my pants because their serving sizes were gigantic and they either looked too pretty to eat or they were flooded with toppings.
First up was the citrus cured salmon. The presentation was beautiful, it almost looked like an artwork.

The salmon was smooth and it would slightly melt in your mouth. My favorite bit thought was the dill cream. All you need is a small dab of the cream and you would instantly get a pop full of flavor. Excellent combination.

Devon Ultimate Toastie  - $25

Next up was one of Devon's signature dish, the ultimate toastie. Luckily I had ordered it because it was the last day for it to be on the menu as truffle season was coming to an end. When this arrived on the table, my eye balls were close to popping out. It was huge! I had no idea how I was going to finish this. The toasties were flooded with loads of mushroom, cheese, gooey egg yolk and of course truffles. It was rich. It was cheesy. It was heavy but you know what? It was so bloody freaking delicious.

Ham hock with a 63 Degree egg - $22?

Devon Cafe, Surry Hills

Left: Banana smoothie - $6?
Right: Ham hock with a 63 Degree egg - $22?
Like everyone else, I absolutely love a really good oozy egg yolk. Devon's 63 degree egg yolk is cooked to perfection. I mean look at it! It is like it is about to burst any minute. Adam sliced through the egg white and immediately a river of egg yolk comes gushing out. Yeah baby!  The ham was a bit too salty for me but the amount of mushrooms on that plate and the egg yolk 'dressing' made up for it.

Spanner crab pasta - $25

Second to the ultimate toastie, this was a favorite of mine. The pasta was home made, smooth and it was thin but not too thin. You might not be able to tell from the picture but there was also a decent amount of crab too.  If you are sharing then I would recommend to order this dish. It is simple and light which is a good way to balance out all the other rich and heavier dishes.

Brioche french toast with nutella, banana, rhubarb and peanut butter ice cream  - $16

And lucky last is the french toast (aka the little lost bread) for dessert. It is everything you are thinking of. Every component went well with each other. Highly recommended if you are a nutella or peanut butter lover. The nutella was hot which is what made it more interesting especially when you mixed it with the peanut butter ice cream. If I wasn't in public I would without a doubt grab the plate and lick everything off there to make sure not a single drop goes to a waste. heh.
So to answer to money question - was it worth the hype? Hell yes. The prices are a bit steeper than your regular cafes but in all fairness, their serving serving sizes are huge and their dishes are packed with loads of flavor. I can't wait to come back to try the rest of their menu and round two of the brioche french toast.
