Developing Grid Pattern in New Abstract Painting

By Abstractartbylt @artbylt

While many of my paintings have a free overall pattern, or a central focus, sometimes I begin a painting with an underlying grid pattern.  Once this is set up, I like to work against it with a play between formality and informality.

In my latest abstract painting, I started with vertical bands of paint.  In this session, I emphasized the horizontal, which led to the grid pattern.

Now I have a structure I can begin to play against.
