Luxury can mean different things to different people and I would agree that it's not about buying expensive things. That one may have grown out of a misconception that luxurious is synonymous with expensive which is not the case. While there can be a material side to luxury, these days the definition has evolved to broader terms. Oscar de la Renta is onto something in defining luxury as living in a way where you appreciate things. In these terms, luxury is accessible to everyone and it becomes tied into a sense of gratitude which is important when it comes to happiness.
