The background

Prime Minister David Cameron left his eight-year-old daughter behind in a pub after a Sunday lunch. Cameron and wife Samantha each believed the other was traveling with Nancy, and only discovered their mistake when they arrived back at Chequers. Downing Street confirmed the incident and said the Camerons were “distraught” when they realised the mix-up. The Prime Minister immediately returned to the Plough Inn in Buckinghamshire to collect his daughter, who had apparently wandered off to the toilets as the Camerons were leaving.

The tweets

Cameron has come in for some pretty heavy criticism on micro-blogging Twitter for his embarrassing parenting gaffe.

You can’t leave a kid in a pub. She’ll have had to listen to the sort of things people say about David Cameron the minute he leaves.

Don’t pity the Cameron child for being without Cameron for 15 mins. Pity the Cameron child for being with him for the other 23 hrs 45 mins.

What do Nancy Cameron and the economy have in common? They’re both in the toilet and forgotten about by our PM.

Nancy Cameron probably had an awesome adventure fighting burglars and eating ice cream all night.

If a family not as well-heeled as the Camerons left their eight-year-old daughter in the pub would they be in trouble with social services?

Things most people leave in the pub: wallet; phone; keys … Things our prime minister leaves in the pub: daughter.

Next time someone leaves a memory stick of data on a train or something, Cameron is going to have a hard time admonishing them for it.
