By Anooppt @anoopppt
The Darjeeling Himalayan railway has been a name Darjeeling has been associated with from a very long back before independence that started in 1879 and now it has earned a world heritage site status as honoured by UNESCO in the year 1999. The traditional steam engine has been connects the Darjeeling Hills with the Siliguri Plains. The Himalayan railway cut its way through the various loops and the tunnels that are made on the sloppy hills of Darjeeling.

Darjeeling Toy Train

It starts its journey of nearly 85 kms from the New Jalpaiguri Railway Station and reaches the Darjeeling railway station after a long but a very memorable journey of 8 hours that you would remember your entire life. Make sure you have your lenses right or else you surely regret after you miss those scenes from the train as you travel uphill along the narrow gauge.
The Darjeeling railway (see more) is also called the toy train and the people of Darjeeling are very much familiar with the whistling sound of the steam engine. But these days the ride is restricted up to the Kurseong station due to a major landslide in the Tindharia region which also has the famous workshop here.
There has been a beautiful documentary made on the Darjeeling Himalayan railway and the lives of the people associated with the DHR. Hope the full journey of the DHR starts soon and gives the tourists a chance to enjoy the beautiful journey.
