Mechaly are vegan leather handbag specialists that I was introduced to for the first time only very recently and, let me tell you, it was love at first sight. As soon as I saw this bag I knew it was the one; the company, the materials, the quality, the style and the size all fitted the bill.

For a fair amount of time now I’ve been looking to invest in a better vegan leather handbag. It’s so easy to fall foul of the temptation to buy cheaper bags that are coincidentally vegan (read: cheap plastic) because they’re pretty and affordable, rather than invest in a quality vegan leather handbag.
The downsides to buying the cheaper ones are obvious: they’re likely to be made from unsustainable materials, unethically made and of dubious quality. Though I still have some cheaper ones that I love, I’m making a conscious effort across my whole wardrobe and home to select fewer, higher quality items that will stand the test of time. I’d love to have just a few “for life” bags that can cover me for all occasions.
As I mentioned my hunt for the perfect quality vegan leather handbag has been going on for a while; I think the problem has been that if I’m going to spend a bit more I want one that’s absolutely perfect.

Mechaly was founded by French designers who are now based in Beverly Hills (‘Mechaly’ being the maiden name of their mother) and I think they do a very good job of summing up their cruelty-free ethos succinctly:

There was only one photo of this bag that I chose on their website when I ordered so I wasn’t sure if the back would be the same or not or what the inside would be like; I was pleased to discover when it arrived that the back is plain, so the pattern on the front really stands out, and the lining has an unexpectedly cool black and white geometric pattern. There are some handy pockets too, both inside and out. The thing that impressed me most though was the feel and appearance of the thick vegan leather itself – you can tell it’s well-made and I fully expect to be wearing this bag for many years to come (I certainly hope so!).
It’s such a pleasure to discover more brands emerging, like Mechaly, that are kind to animals and to the planet but don’t lose any points with their design. When I was browsing the Mechaly site I had a pretty long shortlist of bags that I loved and wouldn’t hesitate to order with them again.
