Lunar Missions Ltd, a group of UK-based scientists are now planning to send a robotic probe to the South Pole of the Moon and drill down 20m into the moon to “discover the geological composition of the Moon, the ancient relationship it shares with our planet and the effects of asteroid bombardment.” They call it “Lunar Mission One.”

Unlike any other space exploration program, the Lunar Missions team asked people from around the world to help raise funds for this mission. Their Kickstarter campaign has just reached its £600,000 goal, thanks to its amazing perks that gives people a chance to reserve their place in Space, a seat in the viewing gallery in the mission control to see the spacecraft landing and many more.

English theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking found this successful campaign to be a great milestone for the future of space exploration.

“Today they have achieved what are the first steps towards a lasting legacy for space exploration,” Hawking said in a statement. “Lunar Mission One is bringing space exploration to the people, and I have no doubt that young people and adults alike will be inspired by the ambition and passion of all those involved in the project.”

The Lunar Mission One will head over to the moon with a time capsule consisting of two parts including a private archive of digital ‘memory boxes’ from millions of supporters and it will also have a public archive containing a authoritative record of life on Earth. This time capsule will be left buried in the moon, giving people a chance to leave their digital footprint on the moon.
