Every crafter needs a table to spread out a project and work on for days without having to gather up all the materials and put them away daily. I currently work on projects in my bedroom, usually sitting on my bed due to limited space. So I have been looking forward to having my own craft room and an area to spread out!!
I am so excited about how my finished craft table turned out!!
I knew I wanted to find a big wooden table and repaint it. I have had my eyes peeled for months at estate sales. In April I found my perfect table for a heck of a deal. The sign said $45 and it was 50% off, however the gentlemen gave it to me for $15!! It was pretty rough and needed some love and attention.
There was a laminate top glued down that I didn’t notice until I got it home. I decided to peel the laminate top off and sand it down. I was pleasantly surprised by the solid wood underneath, in decent shape.
Here are the materials I thought I was going to use. I knew I wanted an accent color and had teal or mint in mind when I went to Home Depot. I fell in love with Radiant Orchid (the color of the year)!!
I attempted to make my own chalk paint so that I could avoid sanding the whole table. It was a DISASTER!! I thought I followed this blog’s instructions perfectly….but it was so thick I couldn’t paint it onto the table. I ruined my entire can of paint even though I mixed in a separate container. I kept adding the paint to try to thin out the consistency until I was out of paint. Womp womp womp. If you make your own chalk paint, I would love any tips or tricks….I will give it another try!
So I went into Brent’s garage and found multiple cans of paint left by the previous owners, used to paint the inside walls. PERFECT! I definitely didn’t want to stop mid project and make a Home Depot run.
So the sanding continued all over the legs, it was a breeze and took no time at all with my electric sander ($7 from an estate sale!).
This project was full of setbacks. After I painted the first coat of white on top it started to rain :(
I had to repaint the table top about 3 times due to rain or drops from the trees. The garage would have been a better location but I was home alone and couldn’t carry the table from the backyard to the garage. So the struggle continued.
I laid down my painters tape in the width I wanted and then painted a coat of white first. This ensures that any paint bleeding under the tape will be white, not the bright pink. It makes for a crisp, straight, professional line!!
Next, I painted the accent color over the white. I remove the tape before the paint dries. I think it helps to make a crisp line, also.
I absolutely love the finished product. The crisp white against the radiant orchid. And the pop of color when the drawers are pulled out. Can you believe the entire project cost less than $40, including the actual table!!
