Countdown to Met Costume Gala 2011

By Objectsnotpaintings
Several months ago I reported on this blog that the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute will honor the career of the late, and great, fashion designer Alexander McQueen by exhibiting his work in May. The Met Costume Gala is always a huge fashion extravaganza and this year promises to be no different. The NY Post has recently reported that Daphne Guinness will be getting ready for that evenings festivities (on May 2nd) in the windows of shopping emporium, Barney's New York. This piece of "performance art" will be part of the store's six-week exhibition called "Fashion as Art." The installation will also include items from Guinness' wardrobe, including pieces acquired from style icon Isabella Blow (you may recall that Guinness purchased Blow's collection before Christie's had the chance to auction it off), and a short documentary on Guinness.
"Fashion as Art." is not the only opportunity that fashion lovers will get to see Guinness up close and personal. The Museum at F.I.T. is planning an exhibition simply titled "Daphne Guinness" for this coming September. That exhibition will include 100 of her personal garments and accessories by designers such as McQueen, Azzedine Alaïa, Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel, John Galliano for Christian Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, Rick Owens, Gareth Pugh, and Valentino. The exhibition will also include some of her own designs also. Along with Valerie Steele, Guinness is also billed as the co-curator of this exhibition. I can not wait to see this!
"Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty" will open to the public at the Costume Institute on May 4th.
