Comme Des Garçons: Boy Meets Girl, a Question of Monogamy?

By Fetesvosyeux

The boy meets girl reference is not the start or end to my own love story. It is a new story in the world of fashion. I'm talking about the androgyn look, one of this year's wintertrends.
So what is this androgyn thing i'm talking about?
"Andro" means man, and 'gyn' refers to 'woman. Litteraly
: the quality of having a blend of both strong masculine and strong feminine characteristics. In the fashionworld this gets translated to this:

Comme des garçons: boy meets girl, a question of monogamy? Comme des garçons: boy meets girl, a question of monogamy?

Comme des garçons: boy meets girl, a question of monogamy?
Sharp and sensual suits, bow ties, oversized blazers, loafer-shoes, brogues, hats, short slicked back hair and so on and so on. This style is something that Parisisan ladies have been doing for a long time. Especially the oversized thing.

Women and men, stylish and switching roles...In the fashion world the roles of the sexes are much easier and "let go" than in real life. In real life most of us girls don't dress like boys, and most of the boys don't dress up like girls (which is another trend).
This reminded me of a course i followed given by Professor Johan Mertens (author of the book: from sperm cell to love, and evolutionary biologist). The course tried to explain our human behaviour through an evolutionary prespective. Something that really sticked to mind was the question if we are, or are not, a monogamous specy? Evolutionary, we are not. I'm sparing you from a whole explanation (i suggest you read the book), but one of the things he said was that if we were truly monogamous men and women would look the same. He refered to a certain bird specy where females and males look exactly the same. Since they have to work together for the survival of their offspring, 24h/24h & 7/, they cannot afford to be unloyal to each other. They simply do not have the time. Else their offspring, and genetic material gets lost. They cannot afford to look nice for possible other partners, so they look the same.
Truly monagamous couples tend to look/dress the same (that's also why girls in love, tend to wear their boyfriend's clothes). I know this must sound strange, but again: read to book. I'm not sure if i really share this view, because it implies that i must be the total opposite of monogamous. I  do love to wear clothes from the men's departement and my boyfriend. But mostly i try to look and dress different, i love to get all dolled up before going out. I don't think i do this to make impressions on guys, but i love to think i do it for myself, to feel good. Maybe i'm just lying to myself and is it true what Professor Mertens says. Or maybe professor Mertens just doensn't know anything about women. Anyway, his perspective gives the androgynous trend a whole other meaning. Maybe the time has come where the overconsumptiom of sex can make place for monogamous love? Or maybe we just love to try something different once in a while and is this a trend, that, like most trends, will blow over too.
