Irish Coffee

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with an Irish Coffee!

For a typical St. Patrick’s Day in Syracuse, NY, something warm to toast the jovial holiday is required.  While the idea of putting a nip of something stronger in coffee dates as far back as the mid-1800s, the credit for Irish Coffee goes to Joe Sheridan, an Irish chef, who served it up to weary travelers in the 1940s.  See article here for more about the toasty favorite.

Typically a heavy cream is used to float on top of the coffee, but lighter and easier to manage whipped cream is often substituted.

What you’ll need:  Irish Whiskey, Coffee, sugar and cream.

Brew up your favorite coffee (non-flavored).  Pour 1 1/2 of Irish Whiskey into your mug.  Add a teaspoon or two of sugar.  Fill with coffee.  Stir to make sure the sugar dissolves.  Then top it off with whipped cream.

How I like it:  This recipe is a quick and easy one.  Using an Irish Whiskey is a must, and really why wouldn’t you?  For a little something different, I use Irish Mist with its hint of honey and spices.  Irish Mist tends to be sweeter than traditional whiskeys so I don’t recommend using as much sugar.  And of course, I go with a heaping mound of whipped cream on top.  Some recipes will use cinnamon or even chocolate syrup on top of the cream, but it’s best to serve it up unadorned.  Unless of course you happen to have green sugar to sprinkle and add some holiday cheer!
