Cluster beans are called “Gawar ki phali” in hindi. I was totally unaware that a vegetable like this existed before coming to Bangalore. But when I saw them in vegetables section of a supermarket I bought them to try a simple and healthy recipe with it. I always add potatoes with almost all the beans to add more flavor to the dish. This vegetable takes some time in cleaning and chopping but it is healthy and good for loosing weight because of its good fiber content. Lets have a look how I make this simple healthy dish which can be eaten with rice and rotis.

Prep time: 15 minutes

Cook time: 30 minutes
Serves: 2

Ingredients: -

  • 250 gm tender Cluster beans
  • 1 large Potato peeled and cubed
  • 1 Onion chopped
  • 1 tsp Coriander powder
  • 3/4 tsp Red chili powder(optional)
  • 1/4 tsp Garam masala
  • 1/4 tsp Turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp Cumin seeds
  • 2 tbsp Oil
  • Salt to taste

Method: -

  • Wash and clean cluster beans by removing the ends, stings and side strings. Chop them in 1 or 1/2 inch pieces.
  • Heat oil in a kadai or pan and crackle cumin seeds.
  • Add chopped onions and fry until they turn translucent.
  • Add potato and fry for 2-3 mins.
  • Add cluster beans, turmeric, salt and mix well.
  • Add Coriander powder, Garam masala and Red Chili powder and mix.
  • Cover it and cook at low flame till potatoes and beans become tender.
  • After adding salt the beans will release some water but anyhow if you think there is not enough water then you can add a little so that the vegetable doesn’t stick at
  • the bottom and gets burned.
  • When the vegetables starts to get soft add enough water to make a gravy and covey the lid to cook for some more time at low flame.
  • When done switch off the flame and serve it hot with roti or rice.
