This past Saturday, I joined a small group of women as part of New York Cares Day. Every Fall, thousands of volunteers gather to brighten up public schools by planting gardens, painting murals, and engaging with the community in other acts of service.
The school we went to was recently designated a “phase out school,” meaning that in two years, its doors will close. Consequently, it’s no longer seen as a priority and doesn’t see a lot lot of funding. Still, the teachers and principal were so enthusiastic and positive; it was clear they really love what they do, and care a lot about their school.
It was so much fun bonding with my team! We painted so.many.circles…. It sounds boring, but it was really meditative. My hand is still sore from holding that paintbrush! I hope to make more time in my schedule for community service. I worked at a soup kitchen every Saturday for years during high school and into college, and I loved it. Giving back has always been important to me, and I want to make it a regular part of my life again.
On Sunday morning, out usual ladies’ potluck group met chez moi for brunch (second breakfast for me!). We were also celebrating Shayne’s return to New York and her engagement! It was a cheery morning, indeed.
As it usually happens when I’m hosting (which is rare, but I want to do it more!), I forgot to take any photos except this pre-bake picture of Company Eggs. Baked eggs have always intimidated me for some reason, but this was one of those really easy recipes that looks pretty impressive. Basically, all you do is sauté a bunch of greens (this can be done overnight), then spread them in a baking dish. You make little holes, then drop in whole eggs. Bake at 400˚ until whites are almost set, and voila!
