Chevron Bathing Suit Cover Up

PictureChevron Print Bathing Suit Cover UpChevron Bathing Suit Cover UpThis past week I realized I had a TON of knit jersey chevron fabric left over from a purchase I made not too long ago. I had this cute mustard print above that I made an infinity scarf out of. I tried to think of what I could make that didn't need that much material and would allow me to use the remnants.  With our vacation coming up soon, I have had the beach on the brain, and realized I could make the "littlest" West her own bathing suit cover up.
So here is my first disclaimer:  While I own a sewing machine, I am by far not the best person to operate it.  You will probably think of a much easier way to make this, but this is a tutorial for what I came up with. :-) While Addy is only 2, she has been wearing 3T for a while now.  She is also a tall girl!  I measured her under her arms, divided by 2, and added 1 for the width of fabric I would need up top.  I then took my ruler and angled down the fabric for the   / \   look to the dress. Here are the measurements I came up with for her:
  • 2 pieces of fabric cut at 12 1/2" at the top, angled to 16" at the bottom, and measuring 18" in length

PictureMeasurements for DressAfter the fabric was cut to specifics, and placed RS (right sides) together, I did a Zig Zag stitch on the sides, leaving the top and bottom un stitched. PicturePin and Sew SidesOnce you have your sides done, you can then opt to do a quick short hem on the top and bottom.  I decided NOT to do it.  Mostly because this is just a bathing suit cover up, but if I had made this as a dress, I would definitely have hemmed the top and bottom.  The good news is this is knit jersey, and it's not fraying or going anywhere.
(Disclaimer 2: Once I finished this dress, I liked how it looked so much that I will definitely be doing the hems and making some dresses.  It's also a perfect light fabric for summer!)
The next thing I did was find some ribbon I had laying around and cut two 7" pieces, measured about 4 inches in and attached them there. PictureSew on some straps!I don't have a picture of how I made them, but I then decided to dress it up a little more and add some bows.  You can't have a bathing suit cover up without bows, right? (Minnie Mouse would say NO.)
After I attached the bows, I was finished.  This was literally a quick and easy project.  I will make her a lot more of these as dresses for the summer.  They are super cute, and all I really need to do is add a hem up top and bottom to make them a little more neat.
