Can Thyroid Cause Hair Loss?

Hair loss is an issue that can crop up in any age group these days. The reasons are so many to point out. Generally this is transient and do not progress however it has the ability to cause significant baldness. Other than these there are other rare autoimmune conditions which may cause hair loss due to scarring and they are generally associated with autoimmune thyroid disorder.

How to know if it is thyroid that might be causing hair loss?

To know if thyroid is the reason behind your hair loss, check for other symptoms of thyroid and they are as follows:

  • Weight changes — either weight loss or weight gain
  • Dryness in the hair or skin
  • Abnormal menstruation
  • Insomnia or lethargy and sleeping too much
  • Cognitive impairment, such as difficulty in paying attention, remembering, and concentrating
  • Being unable to tolerate hot temperatures or cold temperatures
  • Mood changes like anxiety, irritability, and increased nervousness
  • Weakness or pain in the muscles

Treatment of Thyroid Disease and Hair Loss:

Once you get your thyroid disorder detected, the right kind of treatment can be prescribed in order to regulate thyroid hormones and hence regulate the thyroid hormone levels. When all this is done, the hair loss issue will be resolved itself. When the hormones are regulated, healthy hair will start growing. Only issue is that it can take a little while to get the thyroid under control. You have an option of sporting a wig or getting a new hairstyle until you get your new hair back. Through the treatment, be patient and also understand that hair regrowth can be unpredictable and also be aware of the fact that the new hair may differ in texture and color.
