General Statement of Job
Class specifications are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties performed by employees in the class. Specifications are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job.

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
In charge of planning, directing, managing, and overseeing the activities and operations of the Fire Department including, but not limited to, assisting in the preparation of the annual budget, fire suppression, fire prevention, emergency medical services, hazardous materials response, disaster preparedness, and related fire or emergency event operations in the protection of life and property. Coordinates assigned activities with other departments and outside agencies. Represents the Bethel Fire Department, Bethel Rural Fire Tax Board and the Tax Payers of Bethel Rural Fire Tax District in assuring a highly trained and prepared department at all times.

Education and Experience Guidelines – Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities qualifies an applicant for consideration. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education/Training: An Associate Degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in fire science, fire administration, public administration, or a related field to be obtained within 3 years of hire.

Experience: Ten years of increasingly responsible experience in an agency providing a full range of urban fire protection services including five years of management and administrative responsibility.

License or Certificate – Possession of a valid South Carolina Driver’s License with E certification or CDL, CPR/AED, and Basic First Aid, Hazardous Materials Ops, Firefighter II, Fire Officer I, Fire Instructor I.

Residency Requirements – Current resident of the Bethel Fire Tax District or must move into the District within six (6) months of being named Chief, no exceptions.

Salary range – $50,000 to $60,000
