Dana has already learned that love isn’t safe . . . but could it be different in Rock Harbor? As a 911 dispatcher, Dana Newell takes pride in being calm in tough circumstances. In addition to her emotionally-charged career, she’s faced enough emergencies in her own life. She recently escaped her abusive fiance to move to tranquil Rock Harbor where she hopes life will be more peaceful. But the idyllic town hides more danger and secrets than it first appeared. Dana is continually drawn to her new friend Boone, who has scars inside and out. Then she answers a call at her job only to hear a friend’s desperate screams on the other end. Soon the pain in her past collides with the mysteries of her new home–and threatens to keep her from the future she’s always wanted.

Colleen Coble is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors! Today’s post is about one of her new books, Beneath Copper Falls.  I received the book as a blogger with the Fiction Guild’s Elite Reader Program and I was very eager to read it, having just finished one of her other newer books. Because I just got acquainted with Ms. Coble and her books, I didn’t have a chance to read the FIVE books that came before this one, but don’t let that deter you – this book was definitely a “stand alone” book (although I think I would have loved to read books 1 through 5)!!

Beneath Copper Falls by Colleen Coble

Right from the first page of this book, readers know that this will be a tale filled with suspense. Readers find Renee Carter hiding in her garden from the man she is supposed to marry the next day.  Just when you think she may make it away, she is grabbed by her groom-to-be, who is suddenly holding her head under water until she is dead.

Then we meet Dana, who we find ourselves immediately cheering for as she is working toward escaping her boyfriend, Garret and his abusive attitude and behavior. The author helps readers identify with what was going on in Dana’s life and has us admiring her strength to move on to new beginnings.  I was captured as soon as I started reading, and thanks to sitting at home waiting for Hurricane Irma here in Florida, I was able to read the book cover to cover and barely stopped to do anything else for fear we would lose power and I couldn’t read the end!

Dana met Garret through her brother Chris, when attending one of his military parties. Chris and Garret were good friends then, and when Garret only has eyes for her, Dana falls in love. Things aren’t always as perfect as they seem as see Dana, after countless threats, beatings and fearing for her life, realizing that she must escape.  She waits for her 911 operator shift to end, and she makes her way back home to Rock Harbor, where her brother Chris was waiting for her.  Dana is secure in knowing that Chris would never let anything happen to her and will protect her from Garret.

When Dana arrives in Rock Harbor, she lucks out and takes a job as a dispatcher there. Dana decides to take some self defense classes with her brother’s friend, Boone. Boone was burned during his time working as a smoke-jumper in Arizona.  As Dana begins to get to know Boone better, she learns about the details of his sister, Renee’s death. Dana feels that the details are way too similar to the way Garret had treated her.

Both Boone and Dana have painful pasts that they are still trying to come to terms with. Boone’s cousin, Allyson is certain that Renee’s death was not accidental. The more Dana and Boone get to know each other, they realize they both having feels for one another.  They both have lots to overcome to make their relationship work.

Dana is at work when she receives a cryptic distress call from her friend Allyson, who screams “He’s going to kill me too” before the phone goes dead. Allyson’s body is then found and Dana teams up with Boone in order to investigate. As they keep looking into the strange deaths, creepy things keep happening around them.  As I tried to figure out the killer, the “bad guy”, I kept thinking there might be two stalkers – or was it the same guy?  I don’t write spoilers so I’m not going to answer this question for you.

This book is perfect for those who love a tightly woven suspense that will keep you guessing just as the romance will keep you rooting for the past to be overcome so that a future can bloom for Dana and Boone. The characters are believable and feel real, and the story draws readers in and keeps them reading, cover to cover.
